Sterling Capital is pleased to share this closer look at Shane Burke, Executive Director. Shane joined the firm in 2013 and has investment experience since 2002. He is a portfolio manager on the Advisory Solutions team with a focus on fixed income. Prior to joining SCM, he worked as a senior analyst at New England Pension Consultants and as a portfolio accountant with State Street Corporation. Shane received his B.S. in Finance from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and his M.B.A. from San Francisco - Golden Gate University.
About Shane’s professional experience and advice, and his hidden talent:
- Q: What do you love most about working at Sterling?
- A: The people! I’ve had the opportunity to work with very smart people but most of all, they are good people. That’s from the top of the firm on down. Decisions are made to deliver on results and grow the firm but to do it the right way – with honesty, integrity, and care for others. We spend so much time with our colleagues and I’ve truly enjoyed the people here. That’s part of what makes our working culture so gratifying.
- Q: What advice would you give to someone looking to work in the investment industry?
- A: Stay humble. When working in the investment industry and making investment decisions, there will be times that you will be right and others where you will be wrong. I would love to say we always get it right, but when we aren’t: Recognize it, learn from it, and stay humble because it may happen again.
- Q: If you could turn any activity into an Olympic sport, what would you have a good chance at winning a medal for?
- A: Thumb war! Is there a technique to it? Perhaps, but there were a lot of thumb wars growing up and if that turned into an Olympic sport, maybe, just maybe, I could medal.
It’s great to have you on our team, Shane! Thank you for everything you do, and for sharing this with us.
