Sterling Capital is pleased to share this closer look at Nathan Rhees, Executive Director. Nate joined Sterling Capital Management (SCM) in 2025 and has industry experience since 2000. He is a Client Portfolio Manager focusing on SCM’s Fixed Income franchise. Prior to joining SCM, he was a principal and client portfolio manager at Alta Capital Management. He also served as a Vice President with Goldman Sachs in its investment management operation where he managed multiple departments including control and risk management, collateral-based lending, trade execution, and mutual fund operations. Nate graduated with a bachelor’s degree in finance and economics from Utah State University.
Below Nate shares his favorite aspect of the company culture at Sterling, what made him interested in the investment industry, and his dream hobby.
- Q: What is your favorite thing about Sterling’s company culture?
- A: Even in my short time with Sterling, what’s stood out most is the culture of intellectual honesty and open dialogue. There’s a willingness to challenge and debate different ideas, with the shared goal of making the best decisions for our clients. I’ve also been impressed by the level of collaboration/teamwork/friendship across the Fixed Income sector teams.
- Q: What made you interested in working in the investment industry/asset management?
- A: Funny enough, what made me interested in the investment industry was receiving a very fast and unplanned education after investing all my savings, earned from working two jobs while in college, into tech and networking stocks on March 3, 2000. Watching my investments evaporate in just a matter of months was an eye opener. It pushed me to learn about stock selection, allocation and risk, and to better understand the ‘why’ behind investment decisions. The experience was severely humbling but inspired a curiosity that propelled me into the industry.
- Q: What hobby would you get into if time and money weren’t an issue?
- A: I would love coaching sports (football) at the high school or college level. I‘ve spent the last eight years coaching my boys in little league, and it has been incredibly rewarding seeing kids develop confidence and start to believe in themselves, as well as seeing teams go from winless seasons to competing in championship games. Otherwise, the ultimate dream would be to live on a lake and waterski every morning… and maybe one day compete in The Masters slalom tournament. Sadly, this one wouldn’t so much be about time and money, but more about age and orthopedics.
